Project story

Today for Tomorrow, initiated by the CSR Nest Association and funded by the Coca-Cola Foundation, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Forests, is a national platform supporting communities in Romania. Today for Tomorrow began in 2019 with the aim of providing information and infrastructure for selective waste collection.

Gradually, the project evolved into a complex platform with interconnected and complementary components in several areas: education, awareness, infrastructure, and collaboration to bring together all actors involved in the separate collection process and facilitate the implementation of separate collection systems for recycling in different communities.

TODAY FOR TOMORROW ON THE BEACH

The initiative began with information campaigns among tourists and waste collection actions on the Romanian coast. Separate waste collection containers were installed, as well as unique changing rooms with walls made from collected plastic packaging.

TODAY FOR TOMORROW IN SCHOOL

Every year, educational activities on selective collection and its importance were carried out, as well as selective collection competitions in several schools in different counties of the country, with the aim of increasing the level of understanding of the concept of separate waste collection and recycling.

  • The edition held during the 2022-2023 school year brought together 75 schools from 8 counties across the country (Călărași, Constanța, Dâmbovița, Dolj, Ilfov, Vâlcea, Ialomița, and Tulcea).
  • The 2021-2022 school year edition brought together over 32,000 students and over 600 teachers, and 53 outdoor containers and 530 indoor bins were placed in the 53 schools included in the program, for two types of waste: paper/cardboard, plastic/PET, and metal.
  • The 2020-2021 edition brought together 64 schools from six counties in the country (Constanța, Călărași, Dolj, Vâlcea, Dâmbovița, Ilfov) and the Municipality of Bucharest and ended with a total of over 41 tons of separately collected waste.

TODAY FOR TOMORROW IN THE COMMUNITY

Through the Today for Tomorrow in the Community component, the platform brought together relevant actors who can work together to implement the separate collection system in Romania, offering individuals and legal entities the opportunity to create partnerships with local authorities and sanitation operators.

How?

  • By actively involving citizens in the process of improving separate waste collection in their communities through participation in debates on the current situation and solutions for improving this process in the community where they live.
  • By organizing training sessions for representatives of local public authorities with the aim of providing solutions to improve the separate collection process in local communities.
  • By facilitating the establishment of partnerships between NGOs, homeowners' associations, businesses, public institutions, and local authorities on the one hand, and waste collectors/recyclers on the other, for separate waste collection.
  • By providing separate waste collection infrastructure in the communities targeted by the project, depending on the specific characteristics of the community, the level of public infrastructure for separate waste collection, and the need for a certain type of infrastructure in those communities.

At the same time, within the same platform, the CSR Nest Association has published the Guide to Separate Waste Collection. The guide can be consulted by anyone interested on the platform's dedicated website, www.azipentrumaine.ro, and contains important details on how to collect waste correctly at home, at work, and in the community, the steps to follow for implementation, and various answers, solutions, and case studies.
