The story of the project

Between 2015 and 2019, together with the Tășuleasa Social Association, we supported a unique project in Romania: Mountain Walking Schoolan initiative dedicated to those who wanted to learn, correctly and responsibly, how to walk mountain trails. Because the mountains do not forgive mistakes, but always reward well-placed steps. Therefore, real knowledge is needed: about orientation, equipment, safety, decisions in unforeseen situations and, above all, about a responsible attitude towards nature and what we leave for the generations that come #AfterUs.

The Călimani Mountains – an open classroom

The project took place on the Tășuleasa Social campus (Pasul Tihuța) and in the Călimani Mountains, an area with spectacular natural potential, which the initiative aimed to highlight. Participants from Romania and the Republic of Moldova registered online, and the Tășuleasa team selected the groups.

The courses were divided into two stages: two days of theoretical workshops at the Tășuleasa Association campus (tourist orientation, camping, equipment preparation, decisions in unforeseen situations, first aid, mountain ethics), followed by two days of hiking with overnight stays in tents, where everything that had been learned was put into practice. The instructors were mountain lovers with expertise, including members of the Mountain Rescue Service.

The "Mountain Walking School" community

For many of the participants, the Mountain Walking School was not just a camp, but the first step in a long-term relationship with nature — a journey that continues, step by step. Among them, a community of volunteers has been created that continues to participate in Tășuleasa projects.

What do the students of the MWS say?

"In four days, I got to know some amazing people and learned things that I would otherwise have struggled to find out. From an organizational point of view, in terms of the courses and the mountain hiking itself, I have absolutely no complaints. Everything seemed perfectly organized and planned. Everyone really wanted to teach us something, and no question was left unanswered. Well done!" Carmen Bucșa, Sibiu.

"I attended the Mountain Walking School and now my heart is heavy as I have returned to the city where the view is not the same, where people have no time or desire, where you are no longer here with your wonderful spirit and energy." Andreea Andrei, Cluj-Napoca
